Can you keep a secret? We love early spring here at Three Mile Beach, it’s a magical time to be here and experience the beauty of Gwithian Towans and all that Cornwall has to offer. Those first few hints of warmth coupled with blissfully empty beaches make for a heady mix, made all the more enjoyable by the lack of people! This is, Cornwall’s secret season, when the coast is as stunning as ever, but you get it all to yourself.
At Three Mile Beach you can be assured of staying cosy, with log burners and board games to enjoy and pass some time in a most relaxing way.
If you love to have the beach to yourself, this is the time to visit, with three miles of golden yet deserted sand to enjoy. Whether you’re taking a morning dip, chasing the waves, or just breathing in the salty air on a quiet walk, the sense of space is pretty unbeatable.
We love to head out on the coast for a walk, following the trail from Three Mile Beach to Godrevy Lighthouse. You’ll likely spot seals lounging at Mutton Cove, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of dolphins dancing in the surf. The cliffs are beginning to wake up, too—with wild flora starting to peek through, adding some colour to the coast.
Cornwall’s incredible food scene begins to stir in early spring, with restaurants and beachside cafés reopening their doors after a well-earned winter break.
The scent of great drifts from places like The Rockpool, where you can warm up with a coffee (or something stronger) after a windswept walk. For a more indulgent meal, head to The Porthminster Kitchen in St Ives or The Ferryboat Inn at Helford—both perfect spots to enjoy fresh seafood and panoramic sea views.
If a classic pub experience is more your style, The Red River Inn in Gwithian offers a cosy welcome with roaring fires, local ales, and a menu packed with Cornish produce. There’s nothing quite like tucking into a hearty fish pie after a day of exploring the coastline. It’s a super friendly place, and they serve roast dinner all day on a Sunday.
We’ll also be open at our onsite eatery Chomp, where you know that you can enjoy great food alfresco or in our heated yurt – if you fancy a more homely meal here then we can deliver to your beach house. There’s takeaway food you can order from Chomp to be delivered to your house, or we can even provide a private chef if you’d prefer not to leave the beach house.
As spring rolls in, Cornwall’s attractions start to shake off their winter slumber. National Trust properties start to open more of their gardens and properties, always ably supported with great tea rooms for the quintessential Cornish Cream tea – jam first, obviously. Places like the Eden Project or the Lost Gardens of Heligan tend to open their new season exhibitions and displays in early spring, making sure everything is ready for the main season.
For those drawn to art and culture, the quieter spring months are the perfect time to explore Tate St Ives or the Barbara Hepworth Museum without the summer queues. And if you fancy something more adventurous, the surf schools, like our friends at Global Boarders, can offer nice quiet learning sessions – we’ll even pre organise wetsuits to fit that will be in your beach house or shack when you arrive. Just add water.
Spring in Gwithian Towans isn’t about rushing to see and do everything—it’s about slowing down, breathing deeply, and soaking up the peaceful side of Cornwall before the high season arrives. Whether you’re here for bracing walks, quiet beach days, indulgent food, or just a chance to reset by the sea, early spring offers a kind of laid-back luxury that’s hard to find anywhere else.
So, grab your boots, your appetite, and a sense of adventure—Cornwall’s secret season is waiting.
