by Nick McIvor

A Christmas Break in West Cornwall

West Cornwall is the perfect destination for a magical Christmas getaway, there are loads of festive activities right on our doorstep and across Cornwall. Whether you’re after a festive day out, stunning Christmas lights, or a refreshing Christmas dip, we’ll help you find the ideal way to celebrate the season.

Festive Days Out

For a family day out, Cornwall has plenty of options:

The Eden Project (about an hour from Three Mile Beach) offers a fabulous Christmas experience. From ice skating to meeting Santa (advanced booking required), you can soak up the festive atmosphere at one of Cornwall’s most iconic attractions. Nearby, The Lost Gardens of Heligan is another must-visit, with its stunning Christmas lights, warming fires, and opportunities for children to write and post letters to Santa.

Closer to home, National Trust properties such as Trengwainton (near Penzance) and Godolphin (just down the road at Townsend) offer festive entertainment to suit all ages. Check the National Trust website for event details and times.

Christmas Shopping

Cornwall is a treasure trove for Christmas shoppers:

Explore quaint, independent shops in St Ives, Penzance, and Padstow or head to Truro for its bustling shopping streets.

Don’t miss Truro’s Christmas market, running from November 22 to Christmas Eve, for local crafts and seasonal treats. It’s a lovely place to soak up the festive atmosphere.

Christmas Lights

West Cornwall’s Christmas light displays are a highlight of the season, and some of the best are just a short drive from Three Mile Beach:

Angarrack Village (about 10 minutes away by car) transforms into a festive wonderland with lights dotted throughout. A leisurely stroll through the village is a delightful way to soak up the holiday spirit. The pub is pretty good too, and definitely worth stopping in for a drink.

Mousehole, known for its picturesque harbour and charming streets, hosts an enchanting display of Christmas lights that attracts visitors from near and far. The display is steeped in tradition and a must-see if you here at Christmas. There are a few pubs to dive into to warm up too.

Christmas Dips

If you’re feeling adventurous, take part in a Christmas or Boxing Day dip in the sea:

In St Ives Bay, Gwithian Beach (our home) and Hayle Beach both host festive swims. Check Facebook for local updates on the Gwithian swim or join Hayle Surf Life Saving Club’s Christmas Day dip at 10:00 AM – they assemble on the sand beneath Cove Café.

On Boxing Day, head to Porthminster Beach for another community swim to keep the holiday spirit alive.

If you’re staying with us over Christmas and need help planning your Cornish Christmas experiences, we’re here to help you plan the perfect festive Cornish break.
